Physical Therapy
A paediatric physical therapist (PT) focuses on gross motor skill development. They help your child work towards gross motor milestones and skills to help them keep up with their peers. Some examples of areas targeted: core strength and endurance; balance; coordination; jumping and hopping; ball skills such as throwing and catching; riding a bike; safety on stairs; and motor planning. These skills can impact a child’s ability to participate in community activities, and their ability to interact positively with their peers will affect their overall development. Physical Therapists practicing in Alberta are registered with Physiotherapy Alberta - College and Association. |
Speech-Language Pathology
A Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) is a professional who works on all areas of communication and may also provide assessment and support for eating/feeding issues. A pediatric SLP may address communication areas such as your child's use and understanding of language, speech sound production and social communication. These areas will be addressed in a manner that gives your child the most functional skills to help them participate to the best of their ability in their family and community.Speech-Language Pathologists practicing in Alberta are registered with the Alberta College of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists (ACSLPA). |
Psychology
A Psychologist is an health professional who studies how people think, feel, and behave. A psychologist holds a masters or doctoral degree and is registered with a regulatory body. In Alberta, this is the College of Alberta Psychologists. Psychologists work in a wide range of settings and with diverse groups of people and organizations. To work with children, specifically those with severe disabilities, our psychologists are trained in the areas of child and adolescent assessment and intervention. Psychologists providing specialized services conduct assessments to best understand a child’s unique areas of strength and need. They contribute to programming in the areas of skill acquisition (social skills; play skills; cognitive skills; as well as community and daily living skills), as well as behaviour support and management. |
Occupational Therapy
An Occupational Therapist (OT) is a health professional that helps people across the lifespan when their ability to function in activities of daily living (ADLs) is disrupted by developmental difficulties, physical illness or injury, mental illness, emotional difficulties, or the aging process. The role of a Pediatric OT is to improve a child’s independence and participation in play, self care, written communication, organization and the ability to manage behaviour as it relates to emotional and self regulation. The OT will evaluate, plan and implement treatment using developmentally appropriate activities to address the family and child’s participation challenges. With consideration of the environments and activities that the child encounters on a daily basis, it is the OT's goal to decrease barriers and increase understanding within others for the success of the child at home, school and community. In Alberta, OTs are registered with the Alberta College of Occupational Therapists (ACOT) and certified by the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists (CAOT). |
